About My Blog
Hi and welcome to my blog,
In 2013 my father died of cancer. I was just 12, and it was awful. Not only was I bereaved but I also felt the responsibility to care for my younger sister and mother. Although I feel that I coped very well, some moments plunged me into despair and I struggled to go on. I began to spend more time in the garden, and reading old gardening books. When spring came, I planted my first ever proper vegetables; some peas, leeks, beans, onions and a few potatoes. They joy I found from something as simple as an appearing shoot or flower bud, made me feel wonderful. It made me feel alive, and helped me appreciate the smallest things in life, or those you take for granted, because in a matter of seconds, all you have ever known can go, as I, and many others have learnt in the hardest of ways.
I had always loved chickens, and since we had got our first hens five years ago, I had never been without them, but as I began to garden more, my interest and passion for chickens grew. The connection between growing your own fruit and vegetables and keeping chickens became stronger in my mind, and I was spurred on in my mind to expand and spend more time with the flock.
After discovering the joys of gardening and chickening, as well as coping with loss, I wanted to share all I have discovered and all I will discover. Whoever you are, wherever you are, in a London flat or a sprawling French chateau, whether you want to tuck into freshly laid eggs for breakfast, or become totally self sufficient, garnish cocktails with your homegrown mint, or just sit in the garden with a hen on your knee, then this is the blog for you. So join me on this whirlwind adventure, and share your experiences along the way. I hope to see you at the other end of this roller coaster,
Amy.
